Staying Inspired: How much do you share?

A health concern or condition can be all-consuming. Especially when we find ourselves “in the thick of it,” managing a change in our health can take up all of our mental, physical, and emotional bandwidth. And while we may want to be our authentic selves at work or in our social lives, how much should we really share when it comes to our health?

I find myself pondering that very question in my own life right now. I ask myself almost daily, “How much about my health should I share with my family members, my friends, my coworkers?”

On one hand, I want to be honest with where I’m at. There is a lot bubbling beneath the surface of me these days, and it’s hard to be my full self without sharing the health issues I am both grieving and celebrating.

On the other hand, I want to protect myself. Hard conversations don’t get easier just because I want to have them. And good intentions from loved ones, peers, or colleagues cannot always prevent their bias, judgment, or even pity. How much of those sentiments do I want to open myself up to? How do I know who is safe to let in?

And finally, I want to protect the people I care about. I want them to know that despite my struggles, I am happy, fulfilled, and whole. I can bear my burdens at the same time that I can experience the incredible joy of being alive. I don’t want my most precious loved ones to suffer the pain of my heartbreaks, too.

This month, as I ponder on how open I should be, I’d love to learn more about how much you choose to share—with your doctors, your friends, your workplace, your family.

A recent Inspire article on gaslighting opened up an incredible amount of sharing across Inspire, so much so that we decided to host an Ask the Expert on the topic in our Autoimmune Disease Support Community. Read the discussion now or stay tuned for a summary article in our next Monthly Dose.

I am always touched by the members who share themselves so fully on Inspire, and this month’s member spotlight is among them. I invite you to read Kristine’s incredible story.

Sometimes, sharing more about our health can help others who are looking for answers. That tenant is core to the value Inspire provides our members. This month, I’m highlighting an article on 5 rare blood disorders that I hope might help you or someone you love.

Until next month, keep sharing and keep inspiring!
